POS Counter and Workstation Setup Guide

A clear guide for assigning the correct counter, workstation behavior, and local POS setup so each cashier station works the way the business expects.

Inventory & POS Counter Setup End-User Guide

Overview

Each POS workstation should be linked to the correct counter and hardware profile. This helps QBM use the right printer, display, and local counter behavior.

Helpful note: This guide complements the POS options guide. It focuses on the workstation and counter side of setup rather than every POS setting.

Where To Find It

Path: POS Options > General and POS > Select Counter

Use the POS Options General tab to set the current counter and workstation behavior, and use the counter selection dialog when a user must choose a counter before trading.

How It Works

The counter value identifies where the workstation is operating. Related settings such as startup behavior, exit confirmation, and local devices can differ by workstation even if company-wide receipt wording or business rules stay consistent.

Main Areas

Area What It Means When To Use It
Current counter The counter or till the workstation is currently assigned to. Use it so sales, reports, and device output are linked to the correct operating position.
Startup behavior Controls whether the workstation opens directly to POS sales and how it behaves when staff begin work. Use it to make daily cashier startup faster and more consistent.
Local workstation devices Includes local printer, drawer, display, and other hardware choices that may differ between counters. Use it when one counter has different devices from another counter.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Open POS Options and review the General tab on the specific machine being configured.
  2. Set the correct current counter for that workstation.
  3. Confirm startup and exit behavior based on how the counter is used in daily work.
  4. Review the printer and display settings on the same workstation so they match the assigned counter.
  5. Run one test sale and one test print to confirm the counter assignment is working correctly.

Best Practice

  • Keep company-wide selling rules consistent across counters, but allow hardware settings to vary by workstation where needed.
  • Document which physical machine belongs to each counter to make troubleshooting easier.
  • After moving a workstation to a different counter, retest printing and daily reporting.
